SERVPRO Crews Can Help with South Shore Storm Damage
Dealing with the effects of thunderstorms and blizzards is a difficult task for homeowners and renters. The weather is looking better now, but there is still plenty of rain and even some snow expected in the next week. It is not the time to put your feet up and wait for the Spring Half Marathon in May before you get out of the house.
Storm damage in South Shore never happens at 2 pm on a Wednesday afternoon, and then the rain conveniently stops falling on your South Shore residence. The tree falls on your roof, or the wind blows out the kitchen windows at 1 am on a Sunday morning, and suddenly everything is an emergency. Fortunately, SERVPRO has the experience and trained, response team to deal with it.
There are some steps we take in an emergency, but the most important actions we take are to protect your home and its contents, establish a safe environment where our technicians can professionally dry your home and its contents.
We begin by securing your home against further damage, and we start at the top. If the tree that crashed your roof can be safely pulled down, we do that and then cover any damage with plastic sheeting or sheets of plywood. The plastic sheeting is preferred since it is easier to tack down, but plywood is necessary if the hole or holes are extensive and some of the support beams are damaged as well.
If it is unsafe to get on the roof, our SERVPRO technicians have to remove the unsafe portions before they can secure the rest. In case the roof is past saving, it may be necessary for our technicians to protect the attic and the floors underneath at points of entry (ceiling access, stairs, chimneys, etc.) to keep water damage from spreading further into the residence.
Next are the doors and windows. We board up broken windows using plywood in most cases but use plastic sheeting at the request of the resident to provide lighting. In case the doors are damaged, technicians either repair or replace the broken equipment such as hinges or board up the doorways completely.
Once securing is completed, the response team sets up pumps to remove any standing water. Technicians also now begin checking the rest of your home and help stop further damage.
